This is a complete down-to-the-studs restoration of a 1954 mid-century modern home originally designed by renowned Pacific Northwest architect Fred Bassetti. The goal was to honor the home's architectural pedigree while bringing its systems, finishes, and floor plan into the modern era. Every element was carefully evaluated — what to preserve, what to rework, and what to reimagine — so the home remained unmistakably Bassetti while functioning beautifully for contemporary living.

The homeowner wanted to preserve the integrity of an architecturally significant mid-century home while updating its livability for today. That meant keeping the soul of the original design — the angled fireplace hood and brick, the cedar paneling, the indoor-outdoor sensibility — while resolving the inevitable challenges of a nearly 70-year-old home: aging systems, rot, settling, and a code package written for a different era.

We executed a full studs-out renovation, replacing failing systems and bringing the entire home up to current building code — no small task with a flat roof and slab foundation that left almost no space to route new mechanicals. We reworked the floor plan, refinished the original fireplace, and added stacking sliding doors to open the interior to the outdoors. A signature design suggestion from our team was to relocate the original cedar paneling from the walls to the ceilings and exterior soffits, where it now reads as a single warm plane running through the home. We also helped the owner select a door and window package that complemented the original architecture.
